Volunteer FAQ's

Do you have to be disabled to volunteer?

Expand Do you have to be disabled to volunteer?

No, you do not have to be disabled to volunteer with Upstream Access. While the organization centers the voices, needs, and experiences of the disabled community, allies are an essential part of the work and are warmly welcomed to participate in various capacities. The core philosophy is interdependence—the idea that we all rely on one another and can collectively create inclusive, accessible spaces where everyone thrives.

Why are allies important to Upstream Access?

Expand Why are allies important to Upstream Access?

Allies are important for many reasons such as:

  • Building Collaborative Partnerships
Upstream Access values partnerships across various communities and recognizes that allies bring critical perspectives, energy, and skills to the table. When people without disabilities engage in disability justice, they contribute to systemic change and help amplify disabled voices.
  • Shared Responsibility for Access and Inclusion
Allies can play an essential role in helping reduce barriers and promote accessibility in personal, professional, and community settings. Disability inclusion is not just the responsibility of disabled people—it requires everyone to engage in the work.
  • Fostering Social Connection and Awareness
By volunteering, allies learn from disabled people’s lived experiences and develop deeper empathy, cultural competence, and understanding of how ableism operates in society. This helps build solidarity and stronger community bonds.
